Why choose Dometic for your campervan?
Dometic is one of the best known names in campervan, motorhome and off-grid equipment, with a wide range of products designed specifically for life on the road.
Using components from the same manufacturer can make planning your conversion simpler, particularly when you’re putting together systems for refrigeration, climate control or cooking.
Their products are designed with mobile installations in mind, where space is limited and equipment needs to cope with regular travel, vibration and changing temperatures. That makes Dometic a popular choice for both self builders and professional converters looking for compact, purpose built equipment.
Another advantage is the breadth of the Dometic range, including solar panels, inverters, air conditioning units, rooflights & windows or fridges & coolboxes, along with the availability of compatible accessories and replacement parts. Whether you’re building a weekend camper or a fully equipped off-grid van, Dometic offers plenty of options.

- Sealed, pre filled rooftop system eliminates refrigerant line installation.
Recommended for: Campervans, overland trucks, and motorhomes requiring reliable cooling without running the engine or plugging into shore power.
Dometic FreshJet
The Dometic FreshJet series are high capacity rooftop air conditioners. Their key features are:
- Dual zone climate delivering powerful active cooling alongside integrated heating options.
- Automatically adjusts compressor speeds to reduce energy draw and noise.
- Soft start system lowers initial start up current spikes to prevent tripping low amp site hookups.
- Optimised internal ducting significantly reduces indoor fan noise.
- Features built in filtration to reduce airborne dust and odours.
Recommended for: Caravans, motorhomes, and campervans requiring high capacity, reliable climate control via shore power.
Dometic Heki
The Dometic Heki series are rooflights and skylights designed to maximise natural light and airflow in your van or motorhome:
- Double glazed acrylic domes resist harsh weather and minimise wind noise.
- Built in flyscreens and pleated blackout blinds manage insects and sunlight.
- Available in fixed ventilation styles or completely sealed campervan variants.
- Premium models feature honeycomb blinds for thermal insulation that block up to 99% of UV rays.
- Available in many different sizes.
Recommended for: Caravans, motorhomes, and van conversions seeking stylish, insulated roof openings to balance airflow and natural light.
Dometic Solar Panels
The Dometic Solar range includes high efficiency rigid, flexible, and portable solar options:
- Features efficient monocrystalline and PERC cells for high energy generation, even in low light.
- Utilises bypass diodes to maintain power generation during partial roof shading.
- Offers smart multi stage charge controllers featuring built in Bluetooth and app connectivity for system management.
- Integrates seamlessly with Lead-Acid, AGM, Gel, and Lithium (LiFePO4) systems.
- Flexible variants curve up to 30° to flush mount cleanly onto vehicle roofs.
Recommended for: Overlanders, campervan builders, and boat owners needing off-grid power without relying on alternative charging sources.

Dometic FAQs
-
Yes, Dometic fridges are well suited to campervans. Here’s why they’re a popular choice:
- Energy efficiency: Compressor fridges and cool boxes, such as the CRX, NRX or CFX5 series run efficiently on 12V leisure batteries.
- Power options: Depending on the model, they can run on 12V DC, 230V mains electricity or gas with a 3-way absorption fridge.
- Space saving designs: From slimline, front-opening fridges to under bench drawers and portable CFX5 cool boxes, there are options to suit different campervan layouts.
- Reliable performance: They handle varying ambient temperatures well and operate quietly while on the move.
Want to take a closer look? Our article covers the CFX3 and CFX5, and we’ve also written an in-depth review of the NRX50.

The Dometic CFX5 replaced the CFX3 range. Both are portable compressor fridges designed for campervan and off-grid use, but the Dometic CFX5 introduces Vacuum Insulated Panels, the newer VMSO 3.5 compressor and quieter operation.
Dometic says the CFX5 is up to 6dB quieter than the CFX3, whilst the updated insulation and compressor are designed to improve efficiency and performance.
One of our reviews covers our long-term experience with the Dometic CFX3 45.

Both the Dometic RTX and FreshJet are great options for campervans, but they suit different electrical setups.
- 12V cooling: The 12V models run directly from your leisure battery, without needing an inverter.
- Off-grid planning: Check the unit’s power requirements against your battery capacity and charging setup to work out how long you can run it.
- 230V cooling: Runs on 230V AC power when you’re plugged into an electric hook-up.
- Choosing a model: Check the cooling capacity and whether your chosen model includes heating.
- Off-grid use: You’ll need a suitably sized inverter, battery bank and charging setup to run it away from hook-up.
Want to explore your options? We’ve written a guide covering campervan air conditioning, including the best 12V air con units.
-
Yes, Dometic air conditioning units can run from batteries, but the setup you’ll need depends on the model:
- Dometic RTX series (12V): The 12V models run directly from your leisure batteries, without needing an inverter.
- Dometic FreshJet series (230V): These need a suitably sized inverter to run from your leisure batteries.
How long you can run it depends on the unit’s power consumption, your usable battery capacity and the cooling conditions. You’ll also need to account for other appliances using the battery and, with a FreshJet, inverter losses.
If you’re planning to use air conditioning off-grid, size your battery bank and solar or alternator charging around your chosen unit and how long you want to run it.
-
The right Dometic fridge size depends on your van’s layout, how many people you’re travelling with and how much food you want to carry between shops. Measure the space available and think about whether you’ll need a freezer compartment too.

Yes, Dometic solar panels offer several options for campervan roofs. The right choice depends on your roof’s shape, available space and mounting requirements.
- Different panel formats: The range includes flexible SolarFlexEvo panels, LightSolar panels and rigid BlackSolar and Solenergy panels. Check the mounting requirements of your chosen model, particularly for curved or pop-top roofs.
- Panel protection: Certain models feature an ETFE surface coating. Check the individual panel’s specifications and installation guidance before assuming it can be walked on.
- Kit options: Some kits include mounting accessories and a solar charge controller. Check what’s included and whether it suits your battery and panel setup.
