Meet the Scanstrut Roam Series - van inlets made simple
Shore hook-up, fresh water, an outdoor shower - once you start adding campsite connections to a campervan, the outside can quickly become a collection of mismatched sockets and chunky plastic boxes. That’s where the Scanstrut Roam Series comes in. Designed specifically for campervans and RVs, the range brings your main campsite connections together with one clean, consistent design - covering power, water, gas and more.
We recently popped over to see our friends at Fern Campervans who had just installed the Scanstrut Roam gravity fill water inlet and the Roam shore power inlet on one of their builds. It gave us the perfect chance to take some photos, have a proper look at the products in the flesh and see how they sit once they’re actually fitted to a van.
And, as you’d expect from Scanstrut, they’re not just about looking neat. With a background in marine innovation, the range puts plenty of focus on waterproofing, corrosion resistance and thoughtful installation too.
So, whether you’re building a camper from scratch or looking to tidy up an existing conversion, here’s everything you need to know about the Scanstrut Roam Series.

Weatherproof and built for life outside
Anything fitted on the side of your campervan needs to put up with a lot - rain, mud, road spray and sunshine, as well as the occasional enthusiastic wash!
With the covers closed, Roam products are rated to IP68 and IP69K, helping protect the connections from dust and water ingress. They also use UV-stable materials and marine-grade 316 stainless steel hardware, giving them the sort of durability you’d expect from a company with its roots in the marine world.
The lids are fully sprung and include a clever 90° holding bump feature. Open one fully and it stays out of the way, or leave it at 90° whilst connecting your cable or hose. Once you’re finished, the click-to-close design keeps everything neat and protected again. It’s a simple feature, but it shows these products have been properly thought through.
One tidy design across your whole van
Exterior campervan sockets have a habit of looking like an afterthought. One water fill point from one manufacturer, a shore power inlet from another, and a completely different box for your gas connection. Roam fixes that by using the same design across the entire range.
That means you can install your water, power and gas connections without ending up with a patchwork of different shapes and colours down the side of your van.
The range also shares a 95mm hole saw size, and each product includes a mounting foam gasket. So, if you’re installing several Roam units, you can use the same basic cut-out rather than reaching for a different hole saw every five minutes.
The Scanstrut Roam range
The clever bit about the Scanstrut Roam Series is that it isn’t just one socket - Scanstrut has built a whole family of matching connections covering many of the jobs you’re likely to need around a campervan.
230V AC shore power inlet (SC-R-P1)
For UK and European campervans, the Roam 230V shore power inlet provides a dedicated external connection for campsite shore power. It creates the link between the campsite supply and your electrical system with a 200-250V AC, 16A IEC 60309 connection. Once connected, your system can utilise the campsite electric hook-up.
Scanstrut has put plenty of thought into the installation side too. The inlet is 90.5 mm deep and includes integrated cable strain relief, with options for horizontal or vertical cable exits and two rear cable knockouts to give you more freedom when routing the cable behind the van wall.
The ramp-style connection is designed to give a secure friction fit without needing a separate release lever, keeping connection and disconnection nice and straightforward.
Gravity fill water inlet (SC-R-W1)
If your camper has an onboard fresh water tank, the Roam water inlet gives you a proper external filling point rather than relying on a loose hose disappearing through a door or cupboard. The filler uses an 18° downward feed to help water flow smoothly towards the tank, whilst a built-in breather connection allows displaced air to escape as you fill. Depending on your installation, it can be used with either 35mm or 38mm internal diameter fill hose. There’s a lockable filler cap supplied with two keys too, which adds a bit of reassurance when the van is parked up.
Importantly for a fresh water system, the materials in contact with the water are specified as meeting NSF/ANSI 61 and WRAS requirements. The shallow 70.5mm installation depth also gives you more freedom when finding a suitable spot between your furniture, tanks and van body.
Quick connect hot & cold water outlet (SC-R-W3)
Muddy boots, sandy feet, dogs that have found the biggest puddle within a 5 mile radius - an external water connection can quickly become one of the most useful fittings on a campervan! The Roam hot and cold water outlet takes things a step further by giving you both hot and cold water outside the van.
It combines a satin-brushed 316 stainless steel mixer with separate hot and cold feeds, allowing you to control both flow and temperature from the outside. The outlet is supplied with a 3m coiled hose and a stainless steel sprayer with an adjustable spray pattern and locking flow switch. The rear uses two M10 x 1.00 hot and cold feed connections, whilst the external hose connects using a nickel-plated brass quick-connect coupling.
Despite packing a mixer into the housing, the stainless steel link pipe allows the unit to achieve a shallow installation depth of around 70mm, making it easier to squeeze into builds where space behind the panel is limited. If you don’t have room for a full indoor shower - or simply don’t fancy bringing half the outdoors inside after a muddy walk - it’s a very neat addition.
BBQ gas outlet (SC-R-G1)
Cooking outdoors is one of the joys of campervan travel. So, the Roam gas outlet provides an external connection to a suitable onboard low-pressure LPG system, giving you a dedicated point for connecting compatible outdoor cooking equipment.
It’s designed for regulated propane or butane systems operating at 30-50mbar, with an M14 x 1.5 mm compression connection at the rear for 8mm copper pipe. At the front, Scanstrut uses a GOK DIN 4815-5 type quick-connect coupling alongside a ball valve designed to EN 331.
The idea is simple - connect your compatible hose outside, cook, disconnect when you’re done and keep your gas connection protected behind the Roam cover the rest of the time.
This model is intended for as a gas outlet only, so it must not be used for LPG filling.
Multi-power outlet (SC-R-M1)
The Roam multi-power outlet packs several useful electrical and connectivity options underneath a single Roam lid.
It includes:
- 12V accessory outlet
- Dual USB-C charging
- Anderson SB50 50A connection
- Dual F-type coaxial connections for satellite or TV systems
That gives you one neat external point for equipment such as compressors, cool boxes or other accessories, alongside device charging and entertainment connections. The Anderson connection is particularly useful where you need something more capable than a conventional 12V accessory socket. Its maximum power capability depends on system voltage and the wiring used, so the cable size, circuit protection and wider electrical design need to be selected for the intended load.
One detail worth noting during installation is that SB50 terminal crimps aren’t supplied. Scanstrut specifies genuine Anderson Power connectors and terminal crimps for use with this connection.
Universal Electrical & Utility Housing (SC-R-U1)
The universal electrical and utility housing is essentially a blank Roam enclosure, giving you the matching exterior design whilst allowing you to choose what goes inside.
Scanstrut suggests applications including:
- Switches
- Circuit breakers
- Outlets
- Chargers
- Cable feed-throughs
- Air compressor quick-connectors
- Monitoring or inspection points
For a custom campervan build, that creates lots of possibilities. You might use it for an external water pump switch, a bespoke electrical connection, a cable entry point or another component that would otherwise need its own completely different enclosure.
The usable internal area measures up to 70.4mm wide by 78.4mm high, with a maximum internal installation depth of 22.5mm. The installation area itself uses 3 mm PC/ABS material, giving you a surface that can be adapted for your chosen component.
Designed to make installation easier
Scanstrut has approached Roam as one complete range, rather than creating several unrelated products and putting similar lids on them afterwards. Using the same 95mm hole saw size across the range makes laying out several connections much easier, whilst the included mounting foam gaskets help create a neat installation.
The housings are compact too, which matters more than it might sound. Exterior connections inevitably end up competing for space with cupboards, water tanks, insulation, electrical components and whatever else has already claimed the inside of your van wall. Having shallow connection options gives you much more freedom over where everything can go.
Who is the Scanstrut Roam Series for?
Roam makes sense for everything from carefully planned DIY conversions to professionally built campers.
DIY adventurers get a range that can cover many of the main campsite connections whilst still leaving room for bespoke additions through the universal housing.
For travellers looking for more comfort, products such as the 230V hook-up, gravity water filler and external hot water connection bring plenty of the conveniences of home into campsite life without turning the outside of the van into a jumble of fittings.
Long-term travellers should also appreciate the focus on waterproofing, UV resistance and corrosion-resistant materials. When a camper spends months rather than weekends exposed to the elements, those details become much more important.
And for professional converters, having one design language and one common cut-out size across multiple services makes repeatable installations much easier.
