Sam Kidd’s VW Crafter

After years of wrestling with tents and setting up campsites, Sam decided it was time change it up and buy a van to travel the UK and Europe.

Tell us about your new van conversion

I have a 2022 VW Crafter MWB named Kanye, after the last three letters of the registration plate ‘YEE’. It’s a former local delivery van that was bought and resold to me from the original dealer. When I went to view it, it looked like it was in good condition and had relatively low mileage, so it was a perfect base vehicle for a DIY conversion without the substantial cost of a brand new vehicle.

What inspired you to convert a van?

After watching a gentlemen pull into a campsite, wind his awning out and sit down for a beer, I knew it was time to stop wrestling camping gear in and out of the attic and spending hours setting up camp and buy a van. When I started to look at off the shelf campers I wasn’t really inspired. The cost of a custom/high end conversion didn’t seem a viable investment either.

So I set about researching a DIY conversion and immersing my self in the world of YouTube content and The Van Conversion Bible! It was the quality and and the content of the Bible that gave me the reassurance to use Nohma to supply my electrical system. The plan was to build a van capable of carrying and sleeping 4 people with a light sprinkling of off grid capability to help us travel easily around the UK and into Europe during the school holidays.

A sleek, adventurous build with off-grid capability.

What inspired the design of your van?

For the interior I wanted a sleek, uncluttered look but that felt comfortable and cosy. For the outside a rugged, all terrain look was the order of the day.

We wanted the ability to cook inside and out and also enjoy a nice coffee regardless of where we were. When not on campsites, the ability to take a shower was important and when required the van could be used as a mobile office from where I could work.

How has Nohma helped you?

Although after submitting the original requirements and receiving the first specification I had a good starting point, it was the follow up questions and discussions I had with Kaegh which started to make the real difference. He gave me good advice on what the specified components were capable of. He also described what would happen if those components were changed or adjusted. This gave me the flexibility to decide what was most important for performance but also allowed me to keep an eye on the budget.

I was reassured that I made the right decision in using Nohma. Even when I had followed the installation instructions to the letter but got last minute nerves when it came to flicking the switch, I had a quick call with Huey and within minutes we had verified everything and I was officially off grid!

The whole process was a dream. From the quick delivery of the system to the structure and clarity of the wiring diagram, everything worked as I expected.
